It all happens in order. Safe wash first, then a full decontamination, then a single stage machine polish, then the 7 year ceramic coating on the paint. The alloy faces and all the glass get coated as well, so rain clears off the windscreen and brake dust has a harder time sticking to the wheels. The interior gets a deep clean at the same time, so the car feels fresh inside as well as out. A ceramic coating is clear and it goes on thin. It sits right on top of the paint and follows the surface underneath it exactly. So whatever the paint looks like on the day it goes on, good or bad, the coating locks that in for years.

That is the reason we machine polish first. The single stage machine polish takes out light swirls and the dull haze that builds up from years of washing and weather, so the paint is at its best before anything seals over it. Skip that step and you fix the swirls in place under the coating, where you cannot get at them without stripping the coating off and starting again. Do it in the right order and the finish looks sharp from day one and stays that way.

Day to day, a coating makes the paint slick. Water beads up and runs off the panel instead of sitting on it, and road grime has less to grab hold of. The car does not stay spotless on its own, but it gets dirty slower and it comes clean a lot quicker.

The wash gets easier too. Muck rinses off with far less scrubbing, which means less chance of dragging grit across the paint every time you clean it. And it lasts. A wax fades and needs redoing. The coating in this package is a 7 year ceramic, so you are protecting the paint for years rather than redoing it over and over.

Cheaper ceramic coatings are out there, and it is fair to ask why ours is £595. The honest answer is the prep.

Decontamination and machine polishing are the slow part of the job, and the part that actually decides how the finish looks for the next few years. A cheaper quote usually leaves it out. The coating still goes on, but it goes on over swirls and bonded dirt, and now all of that is sealed in underneath.

A coating is close to fit and forget, but not quite. What it really wants is a regular safe wash. Keep the surface clean and the coating carries on doing its job. Let months of grime bake on in the sun and you make it work harder than it should have to.
